Can I put a Sky card in a Freesat box to get Sky channels?

No. Freesat boxes receive free to air channels only.

Does the Humax Freesat+ box play dvds and allow you to record onto dvds?

The Humax is not a dvd player so the answer is 'No'. However, you can play back recordings that you have made onto a dvd recorder via a Scart connection. These recordings will be in standard definition only ... it won't be possible to record HD programmes to an external dvd recorder.
