NordNet ... how it works

The Equipment:

The equipment consists of an 80cm steel satellite dish and an interactive LNB (iLNB). This is positioned on or near to your house and is aligned to the Astra 1E/3A satellite located at 23,5° East of South. Just to put that into perspective, your Sky or Freesat dish is aimed at Astra 2 which is located at 28°East ... so the two satellites are located quite close together.

The iLNB receives and transmits data so, for that reason, there are two co-axial cables connected from the iLNB to the Satellite Modem. Thirty meters of twin cable is supplied with the kit and the modem can be positioned anywhere in the house where there is a mains power supply.

The modem can either be connected directly to your computer with an ethernet lead or it can be connected to a WiFi Router so that any computer in the house can access the modem (via Wi-Fi) and therefore the internet.

The System:

The satellite modem pictured here is 'Always-On', connected to the internet all the time so there is no need to log on or dial up each time you want to use the service. The modem requires no software or drivers to be loaded on your computer. To access the internet, you open up your chosen browser and away you go.

The satellite modem is then connected to the satellite dish and the image on the right shows the NordNet dish installed here. Thirty meters of high quality low loss twin cable is supplied with the kit and it's advisable not to exceed that distance between modem and dish. The dish shown here is fitted to a concrete base but it can just as easily be mounted on a south or east facing wall.

The interactive LNB fitted to the dish transmits and receives data from and to the modem ... no telephone line is required for this system to function. The data is transferred to the Astra 1E/3A satellite located at 23.5° East and the satellite then sends and receives data to the Astra2Connect centre in Luxembourg.
